The “Liquid Detected in Lightning Connector Alert” means your phone’s charging port or the lighting cable is wet or moist. We do not recommend tapping the ignore emergency alert to charge your iPhone. If your iPhone supports wireless charging, it might be safer to charge your iPhone with a Qi-enabled wireless charger while the charging port dries.
However, if your iPhone was exposed to a lot of water before this error message appeared, it’s probably best to avoid wireless charging as well; the liquid may have spread to other components of your iPhone.
What Does “Liquid Detected In Lightning Connector” Mean?
The water-proofing of iPhones has improved with newer models. However, water damage can still affect some parts of the iPhone. The device will also warn you if it is damaged by water.
As we all know, ports can be opened, and water can easily get in.
This can appear in many ways, but these are the most common.
- Shower If you leave your iPhone in the shower while taking a bath, humidity can build up and cause moisture inside your charging port.
- Rain If you are caught outside in a storm or even a shower, your phone can get wet.
- Pool — Using your phone as a pool pump will get you wet!
- Split Drink – Another way to get your iPhone wet is to spill coffee or water.
But in rare cases, this warning may appear due to some bug. But you must be sure that your iPhone was nowhere near the liquid.
First, it is essential to know if there is water in the electrical connector. Some signs can be beneficial in this process.
When your iPhone detects moisture within the lightning connector, an error message called “Liquid detected” will appear. If the phone detects liquid but not liquid, this is likely an iOS bug.
What happens if my iPhone has water resistance?
All iPhones in Apple’s current line are water-resistant if you have an iPhone 7 or later are water-resistant. Water resistance was a feature you would more likely find on your iPhone 7 than on your computer or camera. Apple’s new iPhone 7 was the first to be water-resistant in 2016.
Apple claimed that they had reengineered the seals and adhesives of the iPhone 7’s casing, which gives it an IP67 rating for water and dust resistance.
However, water-resistant does not mean your phone is immune to liquid damage.
Water-resistant iPhones don’t have waterproofing. The metal parts inside your phone could still rust and stop working correctly if they are in contact with any liquid.

You can keep your phone the way it is if you wish. Hit “Dismiss” This shouldn’t be a problem and will not cause further damage. Please don’t put anything in it!
There are several ways to avoid damage once your iPhone has been wet with some liquid. Here are some of the ways you can use it:
These steps will ensure that your phone does not suffer any permanent damage.
1. Unplug any accessories or cables connected to your iPhone
2. Hold your iPhone upside down with the Lightning port facing downward. Next, tap the phone with your palm to drain any liquid from the port.
3. Place your iPhone in a dry, ventilated area.
4. Wait at least 30 minutes before charging your device again
You may have liquid residue underneath the Lightning pins if you receive the “Liquid Detected in Lightning Connector” alert again. It is best to wait at least 30 minutes before charging it again.
Continue this process until you get the alert gone.
Many iPhone users had to wait for their iPhone to dry before the alert disappeared entirely. Be patient!
As long as the damage is not too much, you can cover your cell phone with rice; it helps to dry the moisture as long as it is not excessive. There are better alternatives to rice, such as silica gel, oatmeal, or even kitty litter. However, It is not one of the most recommended options, and you should try it only at your own risk.
How to avoid liquid detected in lighting connectors?
You can find a lot of poor advice online about liquid-damaged iPhones. Most of the advice is useless and can cause more harm than good.
It can be tempting to speed up the drying process, but please do not try the following:
- Do not place your phone in a bag of silica gel packets or rice.
- Avoid using heat sources to dry your iPhone, like a hair dryer or radiator.
- You can’t put anything in the Lighting port.
The best advice is to wait and let your iPhone air dry.
You can speed up the process by using a hairdryer or sticking a napkin into the charging port. Sure. However, you are at risk for permanent damage.
Good news: I think you have only a lightning cable charger. You can charge your cordless charger while the lightning port dries.
You can use your phone while it dries out.
This happened to me seconds ago. My son was taking a bath when my iPhone fell into the tub. It was submerged for approximately 10 seconds.
I received the Liquid Detected In Lightning Connector warning message when I tried to charge the device with the lighting cable.
I kept using my phone, and when it came time to charge it, I used my cordless charging cable. It worked flawlessly. The next day, my phone was completely dry, and the lightning charge worked again.

Remember that an iPhone 8 (or later) is required. Wireless charging is not available on models before this.
Liquid Detected in Lightning Connector iPhone 13
To override liquid detection on iPhone 13, you should keep the following recommendations in mind. First, immediately disconnecting the iPhone from the charging cable is the most advisable. This way, you can avoid significant or permanent damage.
On the other hand, Apple also refers that affected users must undertake some essential steps:
- Put the iPhone vertically and give it a few gentle taps to remove the liquid from the connector.
- Let it dry in a dry area for at least half an hour.
- In case you see the warning again, wait a whole day.
Another option is to use one of the shortcuts available in the iPhone gallery. Water Eject is the name of this computer solution that makes the speakers and the Lightning port of the mobile vibrate until all the water or humidity is removed from the device. It is usually very efficient in emergencies.
On the other hand, the manufacturer does not advise using heat sources — such as hair dryers — or compressed air to solve the problem. Neither should cotton swabs or other elements be inserted that could leave residues inside the terminal and deteriorate its operation.
Finally, we must remember that the iPhone already has wireless charging. So, if the warning appears, you can use this variant to extend the life of your mobile. On the other hand, if you have no choice but to use the cable, you can insert it into the wet Lightning port, ignore the poster and pray that there are no further consequences.
Not working for emergency override
You can usually charge your iPhone without an alert by selecting “Emergency Override.”
Sometimes, however, the alert disappears when you click the override button, but your iPhone won’t charge.
Apple is yet to fix this bug. There are several ways to fix/avoid it.
- Click on Dismiss to restart your iPhone. Press and hold the side button to see the Apple logo flashing on the screen.
- Use genuine Apple chargers! Chargers from third-party vendors trigger this alert.
- MagSafe charging is a wireless charger that can be used to charge your mobile device whenever it’s possible.
What happens if my iPhone detects liquid even though it is dry?
Sometimes, you may see the liquid detection alert even if your Lightning connectors and iPhone are completely dry.
Perhaps your phone is new, or you have given it plenty of time to dry.
If this is the case, you can use a flashlight to inspect the Lightning port for debris and dust. Lightning port obstructions can cause liquid sensor problems for your iPhone.
Compressed air can remove any items you find to avoid damaging metal pins.
If you don’t see any debris when your flashlight into the port of your iPhone, it is possible that the Lightning port or accessory you are trying to use has been damaged.
